When a singer possesses a raw honesty born of real life’s ups and downs, it is immediately obvious — something that can’t be faked. Mary Coughlan is as real as they come, with a voice that can rise from whispery echoes of Piaf and Peggy Lee to full-throated roars that stand alongside no-surname-needed legends like Van or Janis at her peak.

Far more than just unadorned emotion, however, her stage show takes listeners on a musical trip that is by turns flirtatious, humorous, contrite, lovelorn, and above all, soulful. Her multifaceted performance, embodied in 2018’s Woman Undone, a fusion of theatre, music and dance that re-imagined her often tumultuous life and childhood, provides a deep reservoir of experience that has gripped audiences for decades.

Her new single “More Like Brigid” is out now, described by Mary as a tribute to a woman who was “fierce and courageous and always went against the norm.” We think the same can be said about Mary!
