Holden & Zimpel is the collaborative project of British electronic artist James Holden and Polish clarinetist Wacław Zimpel; blending modular synths and alto clarinet, the duo creates hypnotic, emotive music rooted in improvisation and deep listening.
They first connected at the 2018 Rewire Festival, quickly bonding over shared musical instincts, and their debut Long Weekend EP was recorded over four spontaneous days in London, merging krautrock-inspired synths, clarinet, percussion, and guitar into a lush, immersive soundscape.
Following the EP, their evolving partnership continued through lockdown-era performances and studio sessions, culminating in the 2025 album The Universe Will Take Care Of You. Expanding their sonic palette, both artists explore new instruments and global traditions—from Indian ragas to Gnawa rhythms—while staying grounded in a mutual love for trance-like repetition and improvisation.
Together, Holden & Zimpel bridge jazz, electronica, and world music in a unique and ever-evolving musical conversation.
